Acres of Diamonds
As read, updated, and commented by Denis Waitley
“Acres of Diamonds” originated as a speech which Conwell delivered over 6,000 times around the world. It was first published in 1890 by the John Y. Huber Company of Philadelphia.
The central idea of the work is that one need not look elsewhere for opportunity, achievement, or fortune‚ÄĒthe resources to achieve all good things are present in one’s own community. This theme is developed by an introductory anecdote, told to Conwell by an Arab guide, about a man who wanted to find diamonds so badly that he sold his property and went off in futile search for them; the new owner of his home discovered that a rich diamond mine was located right there on the property. Conwell elaborates on the theme through examples of success, genius, service, or other virtues involving ordinary Americans contemporary to his audience: “dig in your own back-yard!”.

As a Man Thinketh
As read, revised and commented by Denis Waitley
As a Man Thinketh is a literary essay of James Allen, published in 1902. The title is influenced by a verse in the Bible from the Book of Proverbs chapter 23 verse 7, ‚ÄúAs a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.‚ÄĚ
The full passage, taken from the King James Version, is as follows:
“Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats: For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee. The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.”
The passage seems to suggest that one should consider the true motivations of a person who is being uncharacteristically generous before accepting his generosity – while in the title and content of James Allen’s work the passage is in a different context; In the Bible the passage is referring to another person, and in James Allen’s work the passage is adopted to primarily refer to the reader himself.
